The trailhead was a little difficult to spot from the road, since it is located within the gated confines of a pumping station on El Monte Road. We set off to explore the new trail on a beautiful warm day. This is an enjoyable little hike with fantastic views of El Monte Valley and El Cajon Mountain, with the option to connect to the trail around Lake Jennings if you’re looking for a longer route. The County has recently opened the Historic Flume Trail in El Monte Valley, which encompasses a short segment of the flume’s route. Over the years, more efficient methods of transporting water have been developed, but remains of the old flume can still be found along its route. The Tunnel Creek Café is a great place to start and end your mountain bike adventure.In the late 1800’s, a wooden flume was constructed to carry water from Lake Cuyamaca to the El Cajon Valley. They'll ride around Marlette to the Flume Trail following it to Tunnel Creek road where they'll descend to the bike shop.Īfter bombing the hill at the end of the trail, dismount and get ready to smash tasty burgers and grilled sandwiches at Tunnel Creek Café! For riders wanting more than 14 miles, they'll continue on the TRT over Marlette Peak at 900 ft climbing from Tunnel Creek Road then downhill to Marlette Lake. This challenging trail requires riders to loft their front wheel over the many solo rock steps before descending just over 3 miles back to the bike shop. After a 265 ft climb out of the meadows, riders contour their way to Tunnel Creek road. The trail runs parallel with the highway, then descends through the meadows, over the bridge and briefly joins the Ophir Creek Trail. This 14-40 mile trail begins at 8700 feet above Tahoe Meadows on the Mt. The Tahoe Rim Trail is chalk full of small climbs and descents with beautiful views of Lake Tahoe and Washoe Lake in Nevada. It's one of the best mountain biking trails in Lake Tahoe and definitely worth the ride! After riding through meadows, the trail climbs to Marlette Lake where riders can take a dip! Then it snakes through single track and granite walls to stunning views of Sand Harbor before a steep descent back to the bike shop. The trail begins at Lake Spooner State Park with a canopy of aspens and evergreens before opening to a huge valley surrounded by mountains. This one way 14-mile trail at 7000-8000 ft in elevation is moderately difficulty and a lot of fun! With 1000 ft of climbing in the first 4 miles and 4.5 miles of single track, riders will enjoy the ups and downs of the landscape. The famous Flume Trail is known for unrivaled views of Lake Tahoe. Everyone wears a mask while onboard, seats are wiped down between trips, and hand sanitizer is available. Shuttles from the shop to the trailheads cost just $18 and are running at half capacity to comply with social distancing guidelines.
